Crawl spaces: What works and what doesn’t work!

1. Mold on floor joists, and structural wood components in your crawlspace, is a time bomb and left unattended it will go off, and before it causes your foundation to fail it will cause you and your families health to fail.

2. If you have “Crawl space Moisture” then you have a problem it’s as simple as that, and if the moisture is constant then you’re practically guaranteed to have mold, and structural damage, and the potential for Radon gas levels that are too high.

3. “Crawl space ventilation”, sealing crawl space vents actually helps, especially if you’ve had “Crawl space encapsulation” installed, which we always recommend, it makes for a much healthier and energy efficient house; for years crawl space vents were thought to be a good idea, but there a bad idea, the air from one vent was supposed to move air out the vent on the other side of the crawl space, and now we know that’s not true.

4. “Crawl space water”, is just very simply bad and we have plenty of articles here that have explained in detail why and how to avoid water in your crawl spaces.

5. “Crawl space fans”, don’t work if their installed in vents, because when they blow air out of one vent, this simply causes air to sucked in another vent, it’s really as simple as that, because you would have to create a vacuum in your crawl space for this to work.

6. “Crawl space Insulation”, the best way to insulate your crawl space is to seal and then insulate the walls in your crawl space. Crawl space insulation in joist that gets wet will get moldy and rats and varmints love it!

7. “Crawl space Mitigation”, Radon is bad, it’s very bad it causes cancer, so you should have your crawl space checked out right now, and if the levels are high which they probably will be if your crawl space has moisture problems, then we’ll show you some great mitigation systems that will vent these gases away from your family.

8. “Crawl space sump pumps”, must be kept in working order, so check it often to make sure it’s working, by simply removing the cover on the pump and pour some water into it, and watch to see that float rises up and makes the pump come on. Once you see it working wait until the water goes down and shuts the pump off, this is a test you can do yourself that will save you more money than you can Imagine and health problems from moldy crawl spaces.

9. “Crawl space vapor barrier” we did an article here, on crawl space encapsulation, take a moment and look it over, this is an Important weapon in the battle to keep your crawl space dry and your family healthy.
